Fancy another, or three?

Introducing Squiffy green, Pickled green & Leathered Green: three new shades created in collaboration with Mitch of Glazed Studios.

Our relationship with Mitch started with a shared obsession with colour…

…He liked ours, we liked the way he used them, and we had a mutual agreement that rooms should make you feel something. That lighting matters enormously, and that the right colour can completely change the atmosphere of a space.

Before long, Mitch became Pickleson’s resident Colour Consultant, helping us to help people make sense of their homes, making them spaces they truly want to dance in, unwind in, shag in and live in.

A few projects deep, Mitch found himself reaching for a green that not only did we not yet have in our range, but a green he couldn’t really find anywhere. Not the exact shade, at least. That perfect muddy olive. So we said “go on then if you think you’re hard enough, make one”*.

*We didn’t actually say that, but we did suggest we create the green we were all missing, together.

So we met. And like all great pub trips, one, quickly became three…

As we explored that elusive new shade, we realised the quintessentially British pub feeling we had in mind actually covered quite a spectrum. Green can be fresh or filthy, country house or cocktail bar, olive grove or old boozer. One new colour just wasn’t going to cover it.

So we created three. Three greens that work beautifully on their own, but even better as a family, taking you from from nearly neutral through to something deep, murky and wonderfully atmospheric.

Enter: Squiffy Green, Pickled Green and Leathered Green.

Three greens. Three stages of the same afternoon at your favourite local.

SQUIFFY GREEN

The first round.

Everyone has a different definition of squiffy. For us, it’s that midday pint when you weren’t technically planning on drinking, or the first fizz at a wedding while everyone’s still pretending they’ll behave.

Squiffy Green occupies much the same territory.

The lightest of the three, it’s nearly a neutral - but it’s had a drink. Soft, sun-warmed and incredibly easy to live with, there’s just enough green to take the edge off being entirely sensible.

It’s the sort of shade you could happily put across four walls without feeling overwhelmed, particularly if you like the calm of a neutral but want your room to have a pulse.

Pair it with Señor Plum for something sophisticated, or match it with Porto Cream for a warm, easy palette that’s beautifully understated. For greens on greens, try it with Pickled Green to accomplish a tonal, layered and deliciously tempting combination.

pickled GREEN

Another round? You’ve had the first one. Everyone’s settled in. Someone goes to the bar and, inevitably, comes back carrying more drinks than anybody asked for.

This is where Squiffy becomes Pickled.

The middle shade of the three is richer, murkier and considerably less interested in calling it a day. There’s more depth here, but it retains a softness that makes it incredibly usable.

It feels grown-up without being serious. Traditional without becoming stuffy. And as daylight disappears, it gets better - taking on the kind of enveloping, old-school charisma that makes you want to dim the lights and stay exactly where you are.

Pair Pickled Green with Open Sesame for a warm, earthy combination with plenty of depth, or put it alongside Pickle Blue for something richer and moodier. It also sits beautifully with Leathered Green, taking you from mid-tone to dark for a cocooning, tonal scheme.

LEATHERED GREEN

Ah, we appear to have stayed out.

By now, lunch is a distant memory.

Leathered Green is the deepest of the trio: dark, rich and beautifully lived-in. If Squiffy belongs to the first drink and Pickled to the rounds that followed, Leathered is what happens when nobody goes home when they said they would.

This shade started us thinking about the great British pub. Leather banquettes softened by decades of use. Polished mahogany. Little brass details worn smooth by a thousand hands. Low lighting. A carpet capable of telling stories that, frankly, are none of our business.

Like really good old leather, this green has warmth underneath its depth. It feels aged rather than old, softened rather than faded; the sort of colour that gives a room instant history and looks as though it might have been there forever.

Use Leathered Green with Town Hall Whisper to let its deep, old-pub richness do all the talking, or pair it with Le Nozze Stone for something warmer and more lived-in. Bring in Squiffy Green too - the lightest and darkest of the greens trio together - to create a brilliantly handsome contrast.

What we love most about these three is that, despite the increasingly questionable names, they’re extremely usable colours.

These shades have been created for actual rooms, and for the way those rooms change from morning to evening - something that has always sat at the heart of our collective approach to colour. When we first introduced Mitch’s consultations, we talked about his belief in designing around how light hits a room, what music you want playing when you enter it, and ultimately how you want that space to make you feel, and these three feel like an extension of exactly that.

Use one. Use two. Use all three. Just maybe don’t operate heavy machinery afterwards…
